 Polish Heritage Highway
Priests of Polish ancestry served the parish--the first rural Polish Catholic Church in Wisconsin and one of the earliest in the U.S. The Civil War interrupted the flow of immigration to all of the U.S. Three young men from Portage County’s Polish community, John Fierkus, Jacob Gosz, and John Platta served their new country.
Ellis was an early pioneer of the Wisconsin territory and of the city.
Town of New Hope records show that John Domaszek and John Giodowski were tax-payers in 1868.

It is not exactly recorded when the Town of Amherst was established, but that was probably in 1852, making it one of the earliest towns in the county.
At the time it included the present Town of Lanark which in 1856 was annexed to the Town of Belmont and soon after became independent.
It lies entirely in the glaciated area and is divided by the Tomorrow River, which has its source in the Town of Sharon, then passes through Amherst, the corner of Lanark, to flow into Waupaca County.

The Wisconsin towns listed on the marker are not Utah emigration towns, and the founders of the Mormon settlements opposed Brigham and his emigration to Utah.
They dropped Wight from their fellowship in the fall of 1844 for relocating to Wisconsin, though he was not formally removed from the Utah LDS Church's membership until 1849.
From the reference point of local Mormons, the Utah LDS Church's use of the modern name on an early Wisconsin history marker is an attempt to associate the pioneer efforts of Moses Smith and other Wisconsin Mormons with the emigration efforts of Brigham Young in the founding of Utah, which evolved into their current corporation.
