Lake Natron is a saline lake located in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border, in Africa's Great Rift Valley.
The alkali salt crust on the surface of the lake is often colored red or pink by the salt-loving microorganisms that live there.
Lake Natron is the only breeding location for Lesser Flamingoes because its caustic environment is a barrier against predators trying to reach their nests.

The overall size of Lake Natron is 1039 km2, 55 km in length and 20 km in width, along a north-south axis.
The basin where Lake Natron is located was caused by block faulting of the Gregory Rift and is primarily composed of volcanic rocks such as phonolites, trachytes and basaltic lava flows (Vincens and Casanova, 1987; Luque, 1996).
To the west of Lake Natron, the surface level gradually declines from 1800 m, where there are a series of escarpments from the Serengeti Plain down to 610 m, which is the bottom of the Rift Valley (Isaac, 1967; Luque, 1996).

Lake Natron, one of a series of East Africa Rift Valley lakes resulting from the rifting process, formed as a large block of the lithosphere dropped to create a graben, a trench-like depression.
Natron, with its pink color that results from the pigmented microorganisms on top of the salt crust, is home to enormous flocks of flamingos that congregate to breed on the alkaline mud flats.
Because the shallow lake sits at the terminus of an isolated drainage basin, evaporation determines the water level and the extent of the superficial salt crust.
