Nemi, an old town and comune of Italy, is in the province of Rome, on the Alban Hills, in central Lazio, 41°43′N 12°43′E, at 521 metres (1709 ft) above sea-level overlooking Lake Nemi.
The excavation was led by Guido Ucelli and was reported in Le Nave di Nemi by Guido Ucelli (Rome, 1950).
Nemi itself has a few late medieval to 18th‑century churches, but its main monument, dominating both town and landscape, is the Castello Ruspoli, the core of which dates to the 10th century.

Nemi - Place of Mystery since Antiquity
Lowering the level of the lake by this amount was a tremendous undertaking and represented a colossal quantity of water.
The water sucked out of the lake was carried in four large pipes which in turn emptied into a huge header tank situated at the entrance of the Roman conduit which cut through the hillside from the lake to the surrounding countryside.
The Roman majesty of the ship dominates the lake that appears, as perhaps it once was, to be the centre of the sacrarium: nothing has changed: among the shadows of the dark trees glows the Golden Bough of legend; on the moving luminescence of the Mirror of Diana the ship travels the course of centuries.

Other legends surrounding Nemi include statues that weep blood, the Roman emperor Tiberius' ghost haunting the crater, a specter of a young maiden wandering around the house of a noble family in Genzano, objects rolling uphill, esoteric night ceremonies in the woods, and a pervading odor of burning wax, with no candles in sight.

Egeria's stream to Nemi thus invokes fountains and wellsprings of Earth Goddesses' ever-flowing ruby-elixir Amrita Kali—from Inanna of the Gilgamesh epic through Ishtar of Sumer to Cybele, the Sybil of Cumae, whose oracular Stones of Splendor "uttered" (gave birth to, as from Uterus) prophecies fulfilled in Roman Emperors as godheads.

Roman Road Walks by David Morton - Alban Hills and Lakes
The early Latin tribes founded several major religious precincts: temples of Juno and Jupiter, and the sanctuary of Diana at Lake Nemi, whose presiding priest had to be a runaway slave who had killed his predecessor in single combat.
We begin in Frascati, a lively town known for wine, baroque villas and a scenic position facing Rome.  As we wind our way up through the woods, a panorama of the Apennines to the east begins to open.  At the top of the hill is Tusculum, where many wealthy Romans including Cicero had villas.
Optional jaunts: around Lake Albano to Marino and Castelgandolfo (where the Pope spends his summers); around Lake Nemi to Genzano.  All offer excellent lake views and historical attractions.

The nearby town of Nemi offers an excellent escape from the imperial grandeur of the caput mundi, and provides the chance to honor something slightly more humble-the strawberry.
Strawberries, one of the last temperate-climate fruit to be cultivated, were not introduced to European gardens until sometime in the 15th century and were thought to be a love potion because of their fragrance and sensuous color.
Whatever the name, these red treats grow profusely on the hillsides surrounding Nemi, perhaps given their delectable flavor from the pure waters of the volcanic lake Nemi that shimmers nearby.

The English ambassador at Rome in 1885 was Sir John Savile Lumley, who undertook the excavation of several trenches in the volcanic crater that holds Lake Nemi and the famed sanctuary of Diana in the Arician nemus, in cooperation with the landowner Prince Orsini.
After two recent trips to Nottingham to study the collection, and one to Lake Nemi itself, I wish to present some results of my research.
In this illustrated paper, I will first give a brief overview of the ancient sites located in the Lake Nemi crater, including the most recently published plans of the area of the sanctuary, the small theater, and the holiday villa, excavated by the Nordic Institute in 1998-2002, believed to have belonged to Julius Caesar.
