LAKE OF NEUCHATEL - LoveToKnow Article on LAKE OF NEUCHATEL
The scenery of the lake, though pleasing, cannot compare with that of the other Swiss lakes, despite the fact that from it the giants of both the Mont Blanc and Bernese Oberland ranges are clearly seen.

Far more populated is the northwestern shore, where, from S.W. to N.E., we fifid Grandson (famous for the battle of 1476 wherein Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, was defeated by the Swiss), Cortaillod (producing excellent sparkling wine), Serrires (with the famous manufactories of Suchard chocolate) and Neuchtel itself.

Besides the capital, Neuchatel (q.v.), the chief towns are La Chaux de Fonds (the most populous of all), Le Locle and Fleurier (3746), the principal village in the Val de Travers.
This act decided the future history of Neuchatel, for in 1393 the house of Chalon succeeded to the principality of Orange by virtue of a marriage contracted in 1388.
The older portion of the town is built on the steep slope of the Chaumont, and originally the waters of the lake bathed the foot of the hill on which it stood.

History of the Wines of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) Introduction From the bustling commercial and cultural centre of the castle of Vaumarcus, by way of La Béroche - a balcony between lake and mountain which richly deserves its name of Neuchâtel Riviera - vines are to be found mingling happily with roses or cherry trees.
An Old Story Vines have been part of the scenery along the banks of Lake Neuchâtel for two thousand years, proving that their cultivation has been and remains to this day a key activity in the Neuchâtel region, even if wine-growing has somewhat lost its role of erstwhile economic predominance.
With the waters of the lake lapping at the foot of the vines right up to St-Blaise, shelter is to be found in the gentler climate of the Entre-deux-Lacs area, between the two lakes.
