		Lake County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado.
		Lake County was one of the original 17 counties created by the Colorado legislature on November 1, 1861.
		Lake County slowly lost territory over the succeeding decades, losing land in its southeast to Saguache County in 1866 and Hinsdale County in 1874; in its southwest to La Plata County in 1874 and San Juan County in 1876, and in its west to Ouray and Gunnison counties in 1877.

		Since the Tularosa Basin has no outlet to the sea, rain that dissolves gypsum from the surrounding San Andres and Sacramento Mountains is trapped within the basin and either sinks into the ground or forms shallow pools that subsequently dry out and leave gypsum in a crystalline form called selenite on the surface.
		During the last ice age a lake called Lake Otero covered much of the basin.
		Lake Lucero, at the south-west corner of the park, is a dry lake bed at one of the lowest points of the basin that occasionally fills with water.

		The lake became saturated by a gypsum (hydrous calcium sulfate), which water had dissolved from certain layers of the cliffs.
		About 30,000 years ago, the lake slowly evaporated, leaving a remnant body of water now called Lake Lucero—the lowest part of the basin, where gravity is strongest—and a surrounding valley floor of exposed gypsum.
		When Lake Otero evaporated, gypsum crystallized into a form called selenite, a three-layered structure similar to that of mica.

		The Lake Valley Limestone is as thick as 400 ft and consists of crinoidal limestones and minor thin siltstones and shales deposited on top of a shallow-marine shelf.
		Lake Otero was formed from melt water of glaciers in Sierra Blanca and began to dry up about 20,000 years ago as the climate became warmer and drier.
		Remnants of Lake Otero are present today as the gypsum dunes forming White Sands National Monument and as present Lake Lucero and Alkali Flat playa.

		Following the evaporation of this enormous lake, large stretches of the Tularosa Basin must have been as littered with selenite crystals as Lake Lucero is today.
		Thus, the most reasonable thought is that the "fossil dunes" were undoubtedly formed at sometime after the Lake Otero Highstand—although topographic relationships allow this formation to potentially have occurred early in the process of lake retreat.
		Although very little new gypsum is forming today, wind erosion of the gypsum-bearing sediments of ancient Lake Otero continues, along with the breakdown of the small gypsum crystals to produce sand.

	Ephemeral Aquatic Environments
		It may be a shallow lake, an arroyo, a stream or spring, or even a small pool or puddle.
		In the desert it is common for lakes to appear in low basins where rainwater collects after running off of the slopes.
		An ephemeral lake has no outlets, so the water stays until it evaporates, is absorbed into the groundwater, or is consumed by animals and plants.

		With the help of his mentor, Jerry Otero, Lake “codified” a 300 gigabyte computer hard drive, an invaluable experience for someone about to establish an NCB for his country where one had not previously existed.
		Lake felt mentoring built his confidence by explaining everything in much more detail.
		Lake’s fellow student, Aviars Skultans of Latvia, had more experience with codification than Lake, but the mentoring phase was still his first chance to write a “fully descriptive” type of stock number instead of a reference type number.

		The darker area, labeled ‘d’ is the lower jaw that was recently found at Lake Henry near Ordway.
		From the time he was 2-years-old, young Frazier had been collecting bones and trying to reconstruct animals, so when he kicked up a few bones along the shore of the lake, he knew he had discovered some really old bones – and they did not belong to a cow.
		Herrell contacted the Lake Henry Reservoir Company, owners of the site where the fossil was found, and was pleased that they were willing to donate the fossil to Otero Junior College.

		The source of sand required for dunes is gypsum from the floor of nearby Lake Lucero at the southern end of Lake Otero.
		All material eroded from from the two mountain ranges ended up on the floor of the Tularosa Valley, which has no outlet.Some of the gypsum dissolved from Permain rocks was redeposited in lake sediments and some remained in groundwater which later recrystallized at the surface form selenite, transparent crystals as long as 3 feet.
		From both lake deposits and surface crystals, extremes of temperature and howling winds break the crystals into sandy particles, which are picked up and borne by the wind, then deposited onto dunes.
