Mineral magnetic measurements were carried out on sources and sediments from the Lake Paringa catchment, South Island, New Zeland.
The measurements indicate the sources from the east of the Alpine Fault (schist bedrock) are magnetically soft and magnetite rich, whereas the sources from the west of the fault (greywacke bedrock) are magnetically hard and haematite/goethite rich.
It is possible to quantitaively unmix the sediments in terms of their sources and authigenic greigite, thus getting an indication of the varying contributions from east and west of the Alpine Fault to the different areas within the u-shaped lake.
