Oil rig disasters - Lake Peigneur - Offshore Drilling Rig Accidents
On the morning of Thursday, 20th November 1980, a Wilson Brothers Corp. rig was drilling for Texaco in Lake Peigneur, Louisiana, which had an average water depth of 6 feet.
Over the course of the morning, the fresh lake water began dissolving the salt and enlarging the hole until water was literally flooding into the mine.
The lake that was once around 6 feet deep was now around 1300 feet deep, with the ecosystem radically altered by increased salt content.

They were fishing in the northern end of the lake, when, suddenly, the lake drained from beneath them, stranding their boat in the mud.
As the lake began emptying into the mine, a vast whirlpool approximately one-fourth of a mile in diameter developed in the lake.
With the emptying of the lake, however, the water was flowing from the Delcambre Canal into the crater.

Video about Lake Peigneur disappearing after drilling disaster » Bunch of Nerds - A Collection of All Things ...
Prior to 1980, Lake Peigneur in Louisiana was a sleepy 11 feet shallow fresh-water lake, that was until oil conglomerate Texaco made a major drilling error while exploring the lake for oil deposits.
On the surface of the lake, a violent whirlpool formed which caused several barges, many trees and large portions of the surrounding terrain to be sucked into the mine.
The lake began refilling with salt-water, temporarily creating the largest waterfall in Louisiana (at 100-150 feet) and drastically changing the lake’s biology by introducing new species of plants and salt-water marine life to fill the now 1,300 feet deep salt-water lake.

KILL THE DRILL - Brought to you by GreenpeaceUSA
Along with the lake, a loading dock, a tugboat, a house, a trailer, 11 barges, many trucks and tractors, botanical gardens, greenhouses, several trees, and part of an island also disappeared within a few short hours.
The crews of several barges on the lake were abandoning their ships and jumping to shore as more and more boats seemed to disappear underneath the water.
Many of those barges were not even in the lake to begin with, but since the lake water was draining into the salt mine, the boats in the canal that connected Lake Peigneur to the Gulf of Mexico were pulled in when the current suddenly changed direction.

The lake had been connected by the Delcambre Canal to the Gulf of Mexico, some twelve miles away.
The ever-emptying lake caused the canal to lower by 3.5 feet and to start flowing in reverse.

Lake Peigneur | Katzphur   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Within hours all the water had vanished from the 1300 acre lake and with it had gone the drilling rig, a second nearby drilling rig, a tugboat, several barges and a loading dock from a canal.
The water vanished so quickly that fishermen were stranded as their boats settled on what had been the lake bed.
Eventually Lake Peigneur refilled although parts of it are now over 1200 feet deep.

Spacecast Community - lake peigneur the swirling vortex of doom
They had been probing for oil under the floor of Lake Peigneur when their drill suddenly seized up at about 1,230 feet below the muddy surface, and they were unable free it.
In their attempts to work the drill loose, which is normally fairly easy at that shallow depth, the men heard a series of loud pops, just before the rig tilted precariously towards the water.
The lake's biology was changed drastically, and it became home to many species of plants and fish which had not been there previously.

If AGL is allowed to dredge the lake, it will bring to the surface years of pollution deposited by previous oil exploration.
If there is a way for AGL to prevent the death of Lake Peigneur during the construction of the proposed storage facility, I think everyone in the area that would be affected has the right to here it.
It is a huge danger to the area and its residents, and if there were to be an accident of some sort like that of the 1980 salt mine disaster that devastated Lake Peigneur and the acres of land surrounding it, it would be a great devastation for the people and the land.

Description: Lake Peigneur is a shallow, now salt-water, lake near New Iberia, Louisiana that was the location of an unusual man-made catastrophe on November 21, 1980.
The lake then proceeded to drain into the hole, as the mine was evacuated.
The event dramatically affected the ecosystem of the lake, both by greatly increasing the depth of the lake, and increasing the salt content of the water from the reversed flow of the Delcambre canal.

The lease held by AGL Resources Inc. was canceled for failure to properly pay lease rental last year, and because it didn't do any mining there for more than six months, according to a letter sent Aug. 2 by the state Department of Natural Resources.
People who live near the 1,300-acre lake on the border of Iberia and Vermilion parishes were jubilant.
They had worried that the project could contaminate the lake, deplete the area's underground water source, or even cause an explosion that would destroy the popular residential and recreational area.

Lake Peigneur Cavern Foes Schedule Rally Sunday - Science - RedOrbit
Atlanta-based AGL Resources -through its subsidiary company, Jefferson Island Storage and Hub - is seeking clearance to use fresh water to leach out portions of the salt dome beneath the lake to create caverns to store natural gas.
Residents of the Lake Peigneur area - which lies on the Iberia and Vermilion parish line - as well as local officials have voiced strong opposition to the idea.
Lake Peigneur was the site of a disastrous 1980 accident in which a Texaco drilling rig punched a hole in the top of an active salt mine, causing the lake to drain underground and causing property damage all around the area.
