Lake Peipsi is situated south of the Gulf of Finland on the border between Estonia and Russia.
The study is based on approximately 500 km of seismic profiles, one sediment core from the lake, and numerous cores from the surroundings of the lake.

I was told that when Estonia became independent, they decided to try to manage the lake ecosystem so that it would favor fish species such as salmon and brown trout; large, predatory species that have high prize and are popular among recreational fishermen as well.
The Russians, however, had an industry that canned one of the major small, pelagic fish species of the lake, the smelt, so naturally they wanted the sprat populations to be high.
