Fed by Clark Fork River and drained by the Pend Oreille River.
All but the southern tip of the lake is in Bonner County, the southern tip which is home to Farragut State Park, the original home of the Farragut Naval Training Station, and the home of the NAVSEA's Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division's Acoustic Research Detachment (ARD) is in Kootenai County.
It is also believed that the eastern side of the lake was in the path of the ancient Missoula Flood.

The presence of the petroglyphs at Lake Pend Oreille probably correlates with the pan tribal gathering area known as Nacemci, or Indian Meadows, near the mouth of the Clark Fork.

Here these trout prospered in the azure waters of a forbiddingly deep lake, just as they did in the lake of their origin, gorging themselves fat on a fabulously rich diet of kokanee and baby lake trout and bull trout and anything else that swims that's smaller than they are.
For one thing, Pend Oreille is incredibly deep, with 500-foot depths only a stone's throw from shore; fishing for open-water fish is all about current and baitfish rather than shelves and flats.
Lake Pend Oreille is in the northern panhandle of Idaho, and is reached from the west on Highway 2, or from the south on Highway 95.
