Prespa was one of the hotbeds of the Macedonian liberation movement at the end of the 19th century.

Prespa lake is fed by underground streams, which inevitably flow in Lake Ohrid, since Prespa is higher than Lake Ohrid and is linked by subterranean channels with Lake Ohrid running under the Galichica mountain.

 Lake Ohrid
Lake Ohrid, that came into being between four to ten million years ago, is Europe's oldest lake, and is amongst the oldest in the world.
Lake Ohrid lies in the valley between Ohrid and Struga, in the border region between Macedonia and Albania.
The Lake is sorrounded by mountain ranges of Mount Mokra (Mokra Planina - 1589 m.) and Jablanica (1945 m) on the Albanian side and by the limestone ridge of Mount Galicica (2255m) on the eastern side.The surrounding mountains are extremely karstic.

Lake Ohrid and the Prespa Lakes belong to a group of Dessaret basins that originated from a geotectonic depression during the Pliocene epoch up to five million years ago on the western side of the Dinaric Alps.

The Small Lake Prespa belongs to the Republic of Greece, and the Big Lake Prespa is separated the Republic of Macedonia (65%), The Republic of Albania (18%) and the Republic of Greece (17%).
The lenght of the lake is 34 km, and it is 2.7 to 10 km wide.
The lake is supplied with water from underwater resources and several rivers that flaw into the lake: Golema Reka, Brajchinska, Kranska, Istochna, Bolnska and Pretorska reka in Macedonia and Stara Reka in the Republic of Greece.

The nearest public transport to the Prespa Lakes is to the town/city of Florina 50km to the east.
The region of Prespa is situated in the north-western corner of Greece, in the Prefecture of Florina.

 Lake PRESPA Sub-basin
The lake is surrounded by the forested mountains Pelister (2,601 m asl), Galichica (2,288 m asl) and Sfika (1,741 m asl) There are four islands in the lakes: two in the Greek part of Micro Prespa, and Mali Grad and Golem Grad in Macro Prespa in the Albanian and FYR Macedonian part respectively.
The Prespa lake basin is generally characterized by permeable limestone in the western and southern part, while at the northern and eastern part of the area the water-impermeable granite rocks prevail.
The lakes are bound to the Helsinki Convention (transboundary watercour-ses and lakes 1992) and the Espoo Convention.
