Lake Pukaki is the second largest of three roughly parallel alpine lakes running north-south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin (the others are Lakes Tekapo and Ohau).
The lake is fed at its northern end by the braided Tasman River, which has its source in the Tasman and Hooker Glaciers, close to Mount Cook.
The lake is an upper part of the Waitaki hydroelectric scheme, and as such, several dams and artificial canals are found near its outflow, linking it with lakes Tekapo and Ruataniwha.

New to me was SIPO - the rest of the passerines were depressingly British, apart from the Australasian Magpie (who was depressingly Australian).
New Zealand Grebe, 8.  Seen in one of the larger lakes close to reeds.
New Zealand Scaup, 40.  Common in the larger lakes.

We weren't sure we had time to drive into the community of Mt. Cook, but we did and it was well worth it.
The drive begins along the shores of Lake Pukaki, whose turquoise color is beyond belief.
When we finished, we found that the view of Mt. Cook (the highest mountain in New Zealand at about 12,400 ft) had cleared.
