Lake Tekapo is largest of three roughly parallel lakes running north-south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin in the South Island of New Zealand (the others are Lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau).
The lake is at the upper end of the Waitaki hydroelectric scheme.
The lake is a popular tourist destination, and several resort hotels are located at the township of Lake Tekapo at the lake's southern end.

Lake Pukaki is the second-largest of three roughly parallel alpine lakes running north-south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin (the others are Lakes Tekapo and Ohau).
All three lakes were created by receding glaciers blocking their respective valleys with their terminal moraine.
The lake is fed at its northern end by the braided Tasman River, which has its source in the Tasman and Hooker Glaciers, close to Aoraki/Mount Cook.

13km north of Twizel is Lake Pukaki, the second largest glacier lake in Canterbury region (81 sq.km).
The mighty Tasman River, fed by meltwater from great glaciers, flows into the north end of the lake, which lies 500m above sea level.
The lake's high content of rock flour (finely ground particles of rock held in the glacial meltwater) gives its water a milky turquoise color.

On the way back to Christchurch we had a short walk at Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo.
Since the snow was about 30-50 cm high and we were the first ones that walked this part after the last snowfall, a few poles were the only signs that we were on the track.

At one point along the 80 road, you will come to a lookout of the lake with Mt. Cook framing one end of the lake in the background.
The shore of this lake on a clear day is a great place to take pictures - Mt. Cook clearly is in the background and the color of the lake is fantastic.
There is a little shade near these lakes, but most of the shrubs are quite low growing.

The view of the lake was so spendid that I decided to try a panorama by standing in one place and pivoting myself about 5 times, each time taking one photo whilst keeping my hands and elbows still.
When I got home, my November issue of Your Family Tree magazine was waiting for me and one of the full products offered in the free disc that comes with it was a Serif program Panoramaplus 1.0.
The lake picture is the result and to say that I was pleased is an understatement.

If you are driving to Mt. Cook National Park, you pass by Lake Pukaki.
I was told by someone who lives there that melting glaciers form the lake, and the water has certain chemicals in it that cause the bright blue color.
You can pull over and walk up to the banks of the lake, but I wouldn't recommend taking a swim.

We had another beautiful, clear day and we had nice views on the ride, particularly as we got closer to Mt. Cook and could see the larger snowy, rocky peaks.
Not far form the village we stopped at Lake Pukaki, which is a brilliant turquoise color from the glacier silt, to take a picture of Mt. Cook.

This is the fantastic scene that quite literaly hits you immediately after driving around a bend and over a small hill, such that I jammed the car brakes on to pull over and take some shots.
The intensity of the colour of glacier fed Lake Pukaki has to be seen to be believed.
A cold 10 degree water temperature doesn't deter water skiers and other water lovers from using this lake.
