Lake Rotoiti is the name of two lakes in New Zealand, one in the South Island and one in the North Island.
Tramping tracks circle the lake and a water taxi travels the length of the lake to ferry trampers to and from the tracks at the head of the lake.
The North Island's Lake Rotoiti is the second in a chain of lakes formed in volcanic caldera to the north of Lake Taupo.

The lake was formed from the crater of a large volcano in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.
Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti are connected by a small channel, and both drain to the Bay of Plenty via the Kaituna River.
It is probably New Zealand's best-known lake island, and is closely associated with one of the best-known Maori legends, that of Hinemoa and Tutanekai.

It is a scattered township lying on the south-western shore of lake Rotorua, amid hills reaching 2600 ft. in the immediate neighborhood, and much of the volcanic soil supports a rich growth of forest or bush.
Four miles from Rotorua, near the centre of the lake, the island of Mokoia rises to 1518 ft. It is partly under grass and partly wooded, and is inhabited by Maoris, by whom it is regarded as holy ground.
Both this lake and the smaller ones to the east, Rotoehu and Rotoma, have deeply indented shores, and are set in exquisite scenery.

The algal bloom in Lake Rotoiti is fed by nutrients from a range of sources, including the lake sediments, farm run-off, septic tanks (most of the settlements around the lakes are not yet connected to a sewerage system), and groundwater (which can take some decades to reach the lakes).
While Lake Rotoiti is their main concern at present, they see its problems as part of a general trend in the Rotorua lakes.
The issue of Lake Rotoiti is one for the regional and local people to manage – but the lakes are nationally important for tourism and recreation.

Annette King said that swimming in the lake at times is a health risk and had been banned for parts of the recent summer.

The Department of Conservation is issuing a reminder that Lake Rotoiti’s eels are protected and can’t be fished after nine eels were found dead on the lakeshore at the weekend.
Lake Rotoiti eels are believed to be the longest-living eels in the world and one of the dead eels was estimated at being more than 100 years old.
The Lake Rotoiti eels are particularly outstanding as they are thought to be the oldest eels in the world.

At 8.30 Nelson Lake Shuttle picked us up from the hostel and drove us our to the Upper Mount Robert car park at the start of the track passing over the source of the Buller River as it left Lake Rotoiti.
The hut was very pleasantly situated on the shore of Lake Rotorua, which was just as well as we ran our of water after the first few litres and had to use lake water from then on.
Followed the shore of Lake Rotorua for a short distance before heading inland and starting to climb up through the beech forest to cross a stream after 30 min, contour left, climb again and cross a larger stream.

Lake Rotoroa is the largest of the two major lakes in the Nelson Lakes National Park.
Rotoroa is a long thin lake and it took us just over two hours to paddle most of its length (at our leisurely pace), and about twenty minute to cross its width to return along the other shoreline.
I've paddled Lake Rotoiti before but Rotoroa is the larger of the two and is reportedly more scenic (if that is possible).
