Lake Rotoma is the easternmost in a chain of three lakes to the northeast of Lake Rotorua in New Zealand's North Island.
The lake has a maximum depth of 83 metres in the northern part and 73.5 metres in the southern part.
During the 1987 Edgecumbe Earthquake the lake level dropped by approximately 10m, leaving homes that were lake side some distance from the lake.

Lake Rotoma also contains 9000 year old explosion craters near its western end, and any recurrence of explosive activity here could remove the narrow barrier which confines the western are of the lake, allowing flooding into the Rotoehu area.
Some flood risk also exists at Lake Rotoehu, and possibly at Lake Rotoiti and down the Kaituna River, if explosive eruptions at Lake Rotoma were to breach the western margin of the lake.
Residents on lake shores facing erupting vents should be aware of potential large waves and if possible move away from low lying shore areas to protection at higher levels.

 To Catch a Tiger
Lake Rotoma is on State Highway 30, it is the last lake in the Rotorua lake district on the way to Whakatane from Rotorua.
The Rotoma settlement is spread along the shoreline on State Highway 30 with the BP service station in the middle.
There is no outlet to Lake Rotoma and only a couple of small streams entering the lake, one is at Merg Lodge (behind the B.P Service Station), the other is across the lake, eastern side which runs out at a little beach.

Lake Rotoma has been a surprise this year with really good numbers showing up in the spawning areas - this makes for some challenging fishing as the lake is so clear.

The Rotoma Incorporation is an incorporation of some 1500 Ngati Pikiao and related hapu owners who are the proprietors of Rotoma 1B block containing some 1595 hectares.
The top portion is to the north-east of Lake Rotoiti, abuts Lake Rotoehu and is slightly larger than the other portion (commonly known as the Totara block) which abuts the southern shore of Lake Rotoehu and shares a common border with part of Rotoma 1B block.
A very small area abuts part of the south western boundary of the Rotoma block and the northern boundary of the Haehaenga blocks (which lie to the south of the Rotoma block).
