The Township of Scugog initiated the Lake Scugog Environmental Management Plan (LSEMP) in 2003 in response to public concern about water quality degradation, overabundant algae and aquatic plant growth, and a reduction in fish populations in Lake Scugog.
This project is led by Kawartha Conservation and is funded through the Region of Durham and the Township of Scugog.
Nitrogen and phosphorus are the two main chemical elements responsible for the process of eutrophication and the overabundant growth of aquatic plants and algae in the lake.

The local newspaper often reported on the Lake Scugog ice harvest and during the winter of 1915 noted there was a good supply of quality ice, being a full 18 inches thick and completely clear.

The story of transportation over the waters of Lake Scugog began hundreds of years ago when the Huron, then the Iroquois and finally the Mississaugas made their way around the broad meandering river which was later expanded to become Lake Scugog.
Pioneers who had settled on the land around the lake and had begun to clear their acres on its shores were obviously outraged by the Purdy dam, so much so that in 1838 a group of farmers went up to Lindsay and destroyed the dam.
Excitement ran throughout the whole of Lake Scugog and the Scugog River all the way to Lindsay when it was announced that the Woodman was to have its maiden voyage on April 25, 1851.

Lindsay is located on the Scugog River, which connects it to Sturgeon Lake and the TRENT-SEVERN WATERWAY, about 95 km northeast of Toronto.
The dam Purdy built backed up the Scugog River until it formed Lake Scugog out of what had formerly been bog and swamp, but it also flooded surrounding farmland and the farmers marched to town and destroyed the dam.
The town developed a more diversified economy with agriculture and manufacturing and was the location of the administrative building for Victoria County.

Cameron Lake is a quick crossing however the channel is not obvious so a good map and GPS helped guide us into the Rosedale lock.
The canals on this lake are also best navigated with a good map and GPS as they're not obvious and tough to see given the distance across.
There is a good RV campground half way across the lake near by the bridge but we chose to press on into the Lake Simcoe canal system which you'll find at the west end of Canal Lake with a good map / GPS.
