SEMINOLE -- The recommendation for how to remove nearly 1-million cubic yards of muck from Lake Seminole is in, but it likely will be a couple of years before the massive project begins.
The final report of the Lake Seminole Watershed Management Plan has been delivered to the Pinellas County Public Works Department, which is overseeing a $15-million restoration of the lake.
The study is being paid for primarily by the county and the Southwest Florida Water Management District, commonly known as Swiftmud, with the cities of Largo and Seminole also contributing.

Lake Seminole is a 684-acre fresh water lake that was created in the 1940's by the impoundment of an arm of Long Bayou in the upper reaches of Boca Ciega Bay.
The Lake Seminole watershed encompasses approximately 3,500 acres, of which 90 percent is composed of existing urbanized land uses within unincorporated Pinellas County and the Cities of Largo and Seminole.
A potential major contributor to the observed habitat and water quality problems in the lake is the mass of organic muck sediments that has accumulated in the lake since its impoundment in the 1940's.

The shore of the lake is all hardwood with 10-15 feet of 4-5 foot tall grasses extending out into the water.
The whole northern part of the lake covers (mostly) dead trees and stumps, the results (I assume) of the lake expanding when the dam was built.

As many as 400 pros and co-anglers from 24 states will be competing in the second Southeast Division tournament of the season for top awards of $65,000 and $35,000, respectively.
Many pros have already scouted the lake, and they expect to see a number of large fish cross the weigh-in stage come tournament time.
The Lake Seminole Stren Series tournament is hosted by the Bainbridge-Decatur County Chamber of Commerce.

 News Release: Lake County and Seminole County fire departments conduct joint training
Firefighters from both counties are receiving training in “tanker pump-off operations.” The training will enable the Lake County Fire Rescue Division, in the event of an emergency, to drill into an overturned tanker truck and drain its contents.
Chris Johnson, Assistant Chief of the Seminole County Fire Department Training Division, is an area expert in mitigating this type of hazardous incident and will lead the training.
A total of 60 firefighters over the course of the three days from both the Lake and Seminole counties’ special hazards and operations teams will complete the training.

A reported sighting of three dolphins in Lake Seminole has city, county and state officials scratching their heads over what appears to be an impossibility for a landlocked, freshwater lake.
My guess is that any “lake monster” in Florida is going to turn out to be either an alligator, MAYBE a crocodile, or else a caiman, a big python or an anaconda that used to be a pet.
I am not familiar with this lake so I am still not sure how hard it would really be for them to get in, but perhaps there was something going on akin to dolphins beaching themselves.
