		Sediment samples collected from the floor of scenic Lake Washington on Seattle's eastern border enabled scientists to pin down the dates of major Northwest earthquakes over the last 35 centuries, said geologist Robert E. Karlin, lead author of a report in the January-February issue of the Geological Society of America Bulletin.
		Karlin has been researching the lake sediment since 1986, when he was an oceanography researcher living near the lake's northern shore.
		The researchers, aboard University of Washington vessels and using side-scan sonar and seismic-reflection profiling, found sediment evidence of multiple slides occurring in different places around the lake at the same time.
