Lake Tai, the third largest freshwater lake in China (2,350 sq km), is situated in the center of the Yangtze River Delta, site of China's most rapid urbanization and one of its largest influxes of rural migrant labor.
Since 1950, the greatest impact on the ecology of the lake has been from: (1) increased man-made inputs to the lake resulting from urbanization, (2) the construction of dams and weirs in the waterways connecting the lake, and (3) increased use of wetland and littoral zones.
The Tai Hu Laboratory for Lake Ecosystem Research of the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology was founded in 1988 as the major field station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for long term ecological monitoring of Lake Tai.
