Lake Tappan was formed by a dam placed on the Hackensack River in 1967.
The Lake Tappan reservoir covers 1,255 acres (5.1 km²) and contains 3.5 billion US gallons (13,000,000 m³) of water, with up to 12 million to 13 million US gallons (45,000 to 50,000 m³) released per day down stream to the Oradell Reservoir.
On March 11, 2003 New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey visited the reservoir and proposed protecting it, Woodcliff Lake (a neighboring reservoir) and their tributaries with Category 1 water purity status.

The Buckeye Trail enters the county from the north at Bowerston and follows a route which crosses the dam at Tappan Lake and connects Tappan Lake, Clendening Lake, and Piedmont Lake before entering Guernsey County southwest of Freeport.
The route loops around Tappan Lake, passing through Deersville and Feed Springs, where two historic markers were installed recently.
From the Tappan Lake area one branch of the byway follows Route 21 and Route 799 through the Clendening Lake region.

For the Saugeyes try bait rigs, crawler harnesses, or jigging spoons near the Lighthouse Marina Point, the Humps near Cemetary Bay, the area in front of the Main Beach, and the Boaters Swim Area in the daytime.
The lake seems loaded with small Crappies with an occasional slab thrown in.
There have been reports of a few anglers catching some good Saugeyes in the upper end of the lake, near Edgewater Park while speed trolling Rattletraps in 6 to 8 feet of water.

I just read in The Journal news that United water will be re-opening Lake deForest and lake tappan for fishing in Rockland County.
