Lake Tekapo is largest of three roughly parallel lakes running north-south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin in the South Island of New Zealand (the others are Lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau).
The lake is at the upper end of the Waitaki hydroelectric scheme.
The lake is a popular tourist destination, and several resort hotels are located at the township of Lake Tekapo at the lake's southern end.

Lake Tekapo water travels along a series of canals to pass through eight power stations accounting for one quarter of the power generated in the Waitaki Valley.

In the neighbouring valley to Lake Tekapo is Lake Pukaki and the Tasman Valley.
Originally built as an engineer's town for the massive hydro scheme construction in the 1970's, Twizel's proximity to the mountains and the recently formed hydro lakes has seen the town become a paradise for the outdoor orientated and those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of larger populations.
Twizel is the closest town to the nearby Ohau Ski Area and the village swells with skiers and snow boarders during the winter ski season.

Lake Pukaki is stunning: I'd arrived at the south end, from where you can easily see Mt Cook, the highest peak in New Zealand and Australia combined, towering over the skyline.
Lake Pukaki is at the end of the Tasman Glacier – Tekapo is also at the end of a glacier – which helps explain why there's so much rock flour in the water, but it also means the water is bloody cold.

But seeing as the town there is again little more than a tourist stop-off with a few backpacker joints and little else to offer, we didn't stay long.
I ventured on alone to Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo - the drive from Queenstown was awesome, with some scary bends but stunning scenery changing from lush and green to yellow dry with bright blue lakes.
I had planned to go kayaking on a glacial lake complete with small icebergs etc at the end of a glacier but a tumble this morning when I was out walking has put paid to that.
