	Lake Timiskaming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Lake Timiskaming (sometimes spelled Temiskaming or Temiscaming, from the French Lac Témiscamingue) is a large freshwater lake in Canada.
		Situated on the provincial border between Ontario and Quebec, the lake lies on the Ottawa River.
		The lake and surrounding area are popular for outdoor recreation.

	Timiskaming, Lake
		All were drawn into the FUR TRADE in the early 1670s, and from then until the beginning of the 19th century, when the trade shifted northwestward, Lake Timiskaming was mainly a transportation route for a succession of fur companies and their traders.
		In the 1880s, permanent settlement began around Lake Timiskaming, on the Québec side, thanks to the efforts of missionary colonizers such as Father Paradis at VILLE-MARIE, and in Ontario through the work of such men as Charles C. Farr, founder of HAILEYBURY.
		Because of these railways and the highways constructed into the area from NORTH BAY and Mattawa in the 1920s, Lake Timiskaming declined as a commercial transportation route after WWI, but became important for tourism and recreational purposes.

		The furthest East I've canoed is on Lake Superior - from Thunder Bay forty miles south to Grand Portage.
		I spent two years at the Manitoba school and graduated in 1975, three years before Timiskaming, I logged about 1500 miles in a St. John's canoe and 500 miles snowshoeing the frozen rivers, marshes, and flatlands of Manitoba.
		Timiskaming was unfortunate, something that happened that cannot be retracted.

	Enhancement of kimberlite exploration methods in the Lake Timiskaming region, Ontario - Activities in 2002-2003
		Kimberlite boulders from gravel pits on eskers near Sharp Lake and Lac Baby (Quebec) were collected to determine the source of the kimberlite boulders in these eskers.
		In the Sharp Lake esker, six samples were collected to study changes in heavy mineral concentrations based on sediment facies, stratigraphic position, and distance along the esker.
		In July, 2002, groundwater in holes drilled by exploration companies in the 1980's and 1990's was sampled at five kimberlites near Kirkland Lake and Lake Timiskaming: B30, C14, A4, Diamond Lake and 95-2 (Photo 2).

	Timiskaming Lake
		The lakes, rivers, mountains, minerals rich underground and fertile clay of the area are all the direct results of their passage.
		The Lake Timiskaming, called "Temikami" or "Temikaming" by the Algonquins, which means "deep waters", is the remains of the Ojibway-Barlow Sea, a huge basin that was covering the whole region, from northeastern Ontario to the limits of Fugèreville, Québec, tens of thousands of years ago.
		30 species of fish live in the Lake Timiskaming, of whom the best known are the northern pike, the sturgeon, different varieties of minnows, the lake trout, the walleye or yellow pickerel, the largemouth bass, the bullhead, the carp, the ling, the perch and the whitefish.

		The Cobalt and Lake Timiskaming region is an "outlier" (an area of rocks surrounded by rock of older age) of 650 square kilometers located in northern Ontario and parts of Quebec, Canada.
		The younger rock is Ordovician (425 to 500 million years old) and Silurian (405 to 425 million years old) in age, and is sedimentary (A layered rock resulting from the consoldiation of sediments) in nature and lies well within the borders of the older Precambrian shield.

		Probably born on White Bear (Cassels) Lake, Tonené entered the Euro-Canadian accounts in 1857, when he was hired by the Hudson’s Bay Company to carry mail between its regional headquarters on Lake Timiskaming and its winter post on Lake Temagami.
		In 1877 Tonené and two others met on Lake Nipissing with federal Indian agent Charles Skene, and explained that their community had never ceded its land but now wanted an annuity from the treaty and a reserve.
		Dominion land surveyor George B. Abrey visited the area that year; his report, in which he estimated the native population to be about 100 in 19 families, supported their position but restricted the size of the proposed reserve.

		The Larder Lake gold rush of 1906 was accompanied by discoveries of gold at Swastika and, in 1911, the first strike at Kirkland Lake was made by William H. Wright.
		During the peak years of the late 1930's the Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Teck-Hughes, Sylvanite, Kirkland Lake Gold and Macassa mines along the "Main Break", and other properties in the vicinity, employed about 5,000 men, with a yearly output valued at over 30 million dollars.
		The thriving town of Haileybury was razed except for a few buildings on the shore of Lake Timiskaming.

		Kimberlite boulders are common in the Sharp Lake and Lac Baby eskers, and indicator mineral chemistry and relative abundance of indicator minerals suggest that they are derived from as yet undiscovered kimberlites in the region.

		Greetings birders November has been a slow month in the area but with all lakes and most rivers still open waterfolw is lingering and a barrows goldeneys seen on the quebec side of lake timiskaming as wellas a few bald eagles and one golden eagle would have to bee the highlights.
		I have been looking for meadowlarks in the timiskaming area for the last 10 years so imagine the shock of finding one while taking my students for a hike along the fozen water of lake temagami.
		The timiskaming banding group had banded a record 2200 redpolls and a record 6 shrikes which give the impression they are shadowing the movements of redpolls happy birding.

		For years it has been recognized that there are many showings of lamprophyre in the Kirkland Lake, New Liskeard and Cobalt areas, but the only real significance given to it was a special relationship between lamprophyre and gold mineralization.
		Grabowski went on a field trip earlier this year to Wawa and observed that visually the lamprophyre in Wawa is very similar to lamprophyre in Timiskaming.

	Local Geology
		Earthquakes in the order of 3 to 5 on the Richter Scale have been felt along the Lake Timiskaming Rift Valley, with the most recent at the start of January, 2000.
		At the north end of the lake is a promontory exposed to divide the north end of the lake in two.
		However, the principal one shown on the western side of the valley is called the Lake Timiskaming Fault.
