Lake Victoria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lake Victoria is 68,800 square kilometres (26,560 mi²) in size, making it the continent's largest lake, the largest tropical lake in the world, and the second largest fresh water lake in the world in terms of surface area.
By 2006 the water levels in Lake Victoria had reached an 80-year low, and Daniel Kull, a hydrologist with the UN's International Strategy for Disaster Reduction in Nairobi, Kenya, calculated that Uganda was exceeding the agreed curve by 55% [1].
The main ports on the lake are Kisumu, Mwanza, Bukoba, Entebbe, Port Bell and Jinja.

Lake Victoria ferries - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lake Victoria ferries are and were steam- and diesel-powered ships used for freight and passenger transport between Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya on Lake Victoria.
The original ferries serving the Uganda Railway in the early 1900s, were built in Britain, disassembled, transported in parts by sea to Mombasa and by rail to Kisumu and reassembled.
Other lakes in the region such as Lake Tanganyika, Lake Malawi and Lake Albert have used ferries which were sometimes linked to railways in a similar way.

 Millennium Ark: Hot News
A new report accuses Uganda of secretly draining the lake to keep the lights on and fears that it spells an impending environmental and economic disaster to the East Africa region.
All the lakes in the region have had declining water levels in spite of the fact that Kiira Dam is not connected to them," said Karisa Kabagambe, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Environment.
Lake Victoria environmental management project coordinator, Dr Stephen Njoka, said the main causes of recession were declining rainfall, evaporation and extraction of water from the Nile.

Mr Ted Odero, a Mbita Ferry manager, said the company was considering extending its jetty into the lake because the depth had dropped by about four feet.
Experts at the Lake Victoria Environmental Management Programme, however, attribute the decrease to massive siltation in feeder rivers and on the lake shore.

The only outlet for Lake Victoria, which is ringed by mountains, is at Jinja in Uganda, where it forms the Victoria Nile.
