About 50 environmentalists, scientists and regulators gathered in the auditorium at Lake Waccamaw State Park to discuss how best to manage a 330,000-acre swamp that, though it is drier and less lush, has made Brunswick and Columbus counties home to dozens of rare plants and animals.
Scientists and government regulators have a wealth of information about the Green Swamp and Lake Waccamaw, but the data is spread across the state instead of being available locally, where it could do the most good, an environmentalist said Wednesday.
Jim Stanfill of the states Division of Coastal Management said that 251,900 acres of the swamp 74 percent are wetlands.

I found this Pink-striped Oakworm on the outside wall of the rest rooms in Lake Waccamaw State Park, NC, at the end of an October 2000 field trip with the Biology 31 (The Diversity of Life) class I was TAing that semester.
Lake Waccamaw is most widely known for its endemic species, which include the Waccamaw Spike along with a few other bivalves, a couple of snails, and at least one fish.
