I investigated the effects of salinity gradients associated with tidal intrusions on the crustacean zooplankton of a tidal coastal lake, Lake Waihola, South Island, New Zealand.
To determine the effect of salinity on the crustacean zooplankton community of Lake Waihola, laboratory experiments were used to calculate the salinity tolerance thresholds of each of the dominant taxa.
The concentrations of crustacean zooplankton, salinity, chlorophyll a and suspended particulate matter in Lake Waihola were also measured over two years to determine the effects of these tidal intrusions on the lake community.

Consequences of climate-induced salinity increases on zooplankton abundance and diversity in coastal lakes
Analyses of taxonomic diversity and abundance of zooplankton at different salinities in Lake Waihola, South Island, New Zealand, are supported by results of laboratory studies of salinity tolerances of 3 crustacean taxa Gladioferens pectinatus, Boeckella hamata and Daphnia carinata obtained from the lake.
Our analyses of Lake Waihola, and data from brackish ecosystems around the world, show that even relatively small increases in salinity levels can drive such systems to a state of depleted biodiversity and abundance, altering ecosystem functioning.

Lake Waihola is a shallow, tidal, coastal lake that receives brackish inflows of 0 \- 4.8\%.
To determine the relative effects of salinity and tidal currents on zooplankton abundance and distribution in this lake, crustacean zooplankton, salinity, chlorophyll {\it a} and particulate suspended matter were measured monthly over two years.
Increases in salinity resulted in a change in crustacean dominance from the predominantly freshwater calanoid copepod, {\it Boeckella hamata}, and cladoceran, {\it Daphnia carinata}, to the predominantly estuarine copepod, {\it Gladioferens pectinatus}.
