Lake Waikaremoana (sea of rippling waters) lies between ranges in the southeast of the park, about 160 kilometres southeast of Rotorua.
The lake itself (elevation 582 metres) was created around 2,000 years ago when an earthquake triggered a massive landslide that blocked a river, so the lake is formed of drowned river valleys, which contribute to its interesting shape.
Maori legends tell that the lake was formed when a father drowned his disobedient daughter, turning her spirit into a taniwha (magical water monster), which frantically pushed this way and that, trying to reach the sea before the sunlight turned her to stone.

The submissions received from tangata whenua, and particularly the community around Lake Waikaremoana, showed that the people felt disenfranchised from the management of the leased area which they considered themselves to be the "owners" of.
The present descendants of the original owners of Lake Waikaremoana feel disenfranchised as they were essentially divested of their private interest in the land in favour of a community interest represented by the two Trust Boards when validating legislation was passed in 1971.

It is called one of New Zealands best kept secrets and it really is! To get there from Rotorua we had to go on 100 km windy gravel road but its worth doing for we saw yet another unique scenery nowhere else found on the north island.
There are some conservation campsites and of course the motor camp at lake Waikaremoana - a must do for every nature-fan.
We did the walk to lake Waikareiti, if the weather is good hire a boat and row to the islands, one of them hosts another lake on it.

The walk was just a few hours, and we had some 'special' views of the lake before arriving at the pickup point for the boat.
As we sped across the lake, the mists came down and the sunny weather, hitherto uninterrupted, was interrupted.
