WAKATIPU, LAKE - 1966 Encyclopaedia of New Zealand
At the foot of the lake is a natural dam of moraine left by the glacier which formerly occupied the lake basin.
Wakatipu is said to be a shortened form of “Wakatipuwaimaori” though its meaning appears to be unknown.
The trough is the lake and the goblin (or monster) rests therein and his breathing causes the regular rise and fall of the “waimaori” (fresh water) that fills the trough.

Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand - Activities and History
Being the third largest lake in New Zealand, Lake Wakatipu is somewhat interesting.
Because of the mountains which rise hastily from the shore of this glacier lake, Lake Wakatipu has an unusual rhythmic rise and fall in water level, roughly about 12 cm every five minutes.
In a Maori legend, this strange rhythmic rise and fall in water level is said to be the cause of the beating of a monsters heart from the depths.
