Lake Zurich - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lake Zurich (Alemannic: Zürisee; German: Zürichsee) is a lake in Switzerland, extending southeast of the town of Zürich.
It is formed by the river Linth, which, rising in the glaciers of the Tödi Range in Glarus, was diverted by the Escher canal (completed in 1811) into the Lake Walen, whence, by means of the Linth canal (completed in 1816), its waters are carried to the east end of the lake of Zürich.
The eastern section of the lake is known as the Obersee, German for "upper lake".

linth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
It leaves Lake Walen at Weesen and flows from there as Linth Channel through the Linth Plain and near Schmerikon into the Lake Zurich of which it is the main tributary.
The taming of the Linth (Linthkorrektur) from 1807 to 1823 was one of the great engineering features of the beginning 19th century, the earliest project of such a size undertaken by the new Swiss state, and a great example of solidary action within the early Switzerland.
The river correction put an end to the floodings, lowered the level of Lake Walen by five meters which greatly improved living conditions for the population, and dried up the swamps, resulting in 2000 hectares arable land in the Linth plain.

Heidi -- played in the movies by Shirley Temple -- was sent from the city to the mountains to live with her white-bearded grandfather.
The heavy fumes of the city had made her ill. Later, upon meeting Peter the goat-herder, this sweet little orphan girl joined him in exploring a wondrous world of alpine pastures and lakes, waterfalls, caves and beautiful mountain scenery -- just like we were doing.
For example, many of Heidiland's villages occupy strategic points on the shore of the Lake of Walen (Walensee), which locals insist "is the cleanest lake in Switzerland." That body of water is noted for its sandy beaches, swimming, water skiing, sailing, boat harbors, fireplaces (barbecue pits), campgrounds and lakeside resorts and restaurants.
