Caroline McNerney of Meredith said when she interviewed summer camp directors around the lake last summer, most told her they had cut back on water activities on the weekends because of safety fears.
But Weldon Bosworth of Gilford, who likes to windsurf on the lake, said such speed boats are designed for the open ocean and their pilots have a hard time seeing and reacting to others in their path.

The intent of the legislation was to remove, insofar as practicable, wastewater discharges to lakes in the Winnipesaukee River Basin watershed, and to provide major interceptors along routes where existing development had exceeded the ability of subsurface systems to safely dispose of sewage.
The treatment plant serving Gunstock Recreation Area, which formerly discharged to a small tributary of Lake Winnipesaukee, was decommissioned late in 1993 with the completion of the Gunstock Interceptor, thereby eliminating the last known point discharge of treated sanitary waste to Lake Winnipesaukee.
