Since Alaska's territory is comprised entirely of boroughs, census areas, and a municipality, Lake of the Woods is the northernmost county in the United States, by definition.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 5.70% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 27.20% from 45 to 64, and 17.20% who are 65 years of age or older.

It was a school and then a courthouse in Minnesota's northernmost county, a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The 91-year-old former Lake of the Woods County courthouse, decaying and hard to heat, has been replaced by a $3 million new courthouse in Baudette, the county seat.
A dedication has been set tentatively for July 20 for the new 22,500-square-foot building, which Paulseth said "is actually the first courthouse we have ever built for the purpose of being a courthouse." It was opened in April and is next door to the old site.
