The resulting changes in the chemistry of small lakes have been followed by national monitoring programmes initiated in the 1980s in Finland (163 lakes), Norway (100 lakes) and Sweden (81 lakes).
These lakes are partly a subset from the survey of 5690 lakes in the Northern European lake survey of 1995.
Trend analyses on data for the period 1990-1999 show that the non-marine sulphate concentrations in lakes have decreased significantly in 69% of the monitored lakes.

The combination of varved lake sediments, large differences in stable lead isotope signatures between natural soil-derived lead and pollution lead, and the remote location in relation to old cultural centers in the old world makes lakes in northern Sweden useful for studies of large-scale atmospheric pollution history.
Estimates from ombrotrophic peat bogs in southern Sweden (11) as well as in Switzerland (16) indicate that the atmospheric lead deposition in the 13th century was 100 times larger than prior to the appearance of anthropogenic pollution 3500-4000 years ago.

In-lake concentration changes of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) in lakes Vättern, Vänern, Mälaren, and Hjälmaren in response to diminished input has been examined from the mid-1960s onwards.
In the latter two mesotrophic to hypertrophic lakes, two shallow basins in L. Hjälmaren showed slow recovery due to release of P from sediments.
In two L. Mälaren basins recovery of in-lake P concentrations was better than expected in comparison to the so-called IMSA-model for lake recovery from nutrient pollution.

C signature, we found that the pool of organic matter in the lakes was dominated by carbon of allochthonous origin over the whole DOC gradient.
Zooplankton were generally depleted in 13C compared to organic matter in the catchment, particulate organic matter in the lake water, and shallow surface sediment.
Instead, the proportion between allochthonous and autochthonous carbon in the crustacean zooplankton was consistent with a rather conservative use of the energy mobilized by bacterioplankton and phytoplankton in the lakes.
