Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna (1888-1958) was a Fijian chief, scholar, soldier, and statesman.
Ratu Sukuna's mother, Adi Litiana Maopo, was the daughter of the Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba, the then reigning Tui Lau (Chief of Lau) and a maternal granddaughter of Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau, the Fijian monarch who had unified the nation under his authority in 1871 before ceding it to the United Kingdom in 1874.
Sukuna hoped to remain in New Zealand to pursue a university degree, but his source of funds dried up and he was forced to return to Fiji, where, in 1907, he joined the civil service as a fifth class clerk.

Although Sukuna was an indigenous Fijian, his father enrolled him at the Wairuku Indian School in Ra, founded in 1898 by Pandit Badri Maharaj, who later served from 1917 to 1929 as the first Indo-Fijian member of Fiji's Legislative Council (the forerunner to the present Parliament.
Sukuna was created a Commander of the British Empire in 1939 and awarded a knighthood (Knight Commander of the British Empire) in 1946, in recognition of his services to Fiji.

He never finished his medical course, because his great-uncle and mentor, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna (who was then regarded as Fiji's paramount chief), seeking to groom him for future leadership of the nation, arranged for him to study history at Wadham College, Oxford University in the United Kingdom.
The marriage was initially opposed by Mara's family, as Adi Lala was from a rival dynasty with which the Mara clan had a history of strained relations.
Mara was survived by his wife, Adi Lala (who herself died on July 20 the same year), and by two sons and five daughters; one son predeceased him.

Sukuna had already earmarked Mara for national leadership and wanted him groomed appropriately.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Adi Lady Lala Mara - who was a more pre-eminent chief in her own right than her husband - five daughters and two sons.

Had Ratu Sukuna lived as Prime Minister of Fiji today, he would not be promoting (the type of policies of the SDL on land which are surely leading to unproductiveness and increased poverty of the tenants and the landowners and the impending collapse of the sugar industry.
Ratu Sukuna would not be supporting the imposition of a sugar industry restructure plan that is based purely on the Fiji Sugar Corporation's management views instead of one based on dialogue and reconciliation between landowners and tenants.
Had Ratu Sukuna lived today he would not be trying to defend his brainchild, the FAB or the NLTB bureaucracy and the provincial administration.

Fiji’s political crisis in 2000 led to the Army and Police rugby teams postponing the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Sukuna Bowl, the annual contest between the two forces that has been in place since 1951.
The Bowl was presented to the forces 51 years ago by Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna and was first won by the Police.
A statement released Wednesday by the Royal Fiji Military Forces said Ratu Sukuna’s introduction of the Bowl was in an effort to curb the "ugly rivalry that often resulted in frequent street brawling between members of the two forces."

In conclusion, Sir, may I say that Ratu Sukuna Day will therefore, be used firstly to celebrate the best in Fijian culture and secondly, to provide an opportunity for the people of this nation to celebrate the best of its multi-ethnic cultures.
