 Lali Puna: Tridecoder (h2so4)
One of the many exciting acts to come out of Weilheim is Lali Puna: Valerie Trebeljahr (voice and keyboards), Markus Acher (of Notwist and Tied and Tickled Trio fame on bass and sampler), Christoph Brander (also in Console and Tied and Tickled) on drums and sampler, and Florian Zimmer on keyboards.
Trebeljahr, who was born in Korea (Lali Puna apparently means "Lali from Pusan") and raised in Lisbon, sings in both English ("for comprehension") and Portuguese ("for non-comprehension").
What makes Lali Puna so interesting, besides being so pleasant to listen to, is the way they synthesize such diverse influences—diverse both in sound and outlook—as techno, noisy indie rock, electronic experimentation, and plain sweet pop, in a perfectly balanced way.

Lali Puna - Left-Handed EP (Morr)
Lali Puna's first release since 2001's Scary World Theory is a rather brief reprise, perhaps due to Markus Acher's very busy schedule.
Which is not to assess some sort of regression to Acher, Trebeljahr, and company, as the pop framework to the verses is simply darker-toned, but when the chorus comes in, the loud, distorted guitars mix beautifully with the ugly electronic tones to create a new sound for Lali Puna.
The music here is very understated, much more like the Lali Puna you're used to instead of the one displayed in "Left-Handed." Trebeljahr's delivery makes the song, singing the chorus as a quiet, hushed lullaby.

But with the advent of groups like The Postal Service, Manitoba, and The Notwist (of which Munich group Lali Puna’s Markus Acher is a member), there has been a marked thaw: suddenly, IDM is being felicitously yoked to pop melodies, vocals and guitars, producing some of today’s most engaging music.
Lali Puna is not the Notwist (whose Neon Golden is one of the most effective marriages of simple, streamlined IDM and simple, lovely pop melodies this writer has encountered).
But Lali Puna veers more toward chopped-up, striated textures than the Notwist, and more toward rock dynamics that indie-pop.

After a pleasant but ultimately faceless title track opener, Lali Puna provide a double-shot of well-wrought rippers: "Call 1-800-FEAR" is the first, boasting a no-nonsense drive, tight instrumental harmonies and undistracting electronic loops that bolster the song's pulse.
"Micronomic", the album's second single, follows in similar temperament, and while not my favorite track on the album, speaks to Lali Puna's ability to cradle their listener gently in melody for one second, and to punch him in the face with a dirty riff in the next.

Only weeks after I spoke to him, Lali Puna is dropping this 3-song taster, and it's clear that Acher's contributions are starting to blur between the different groups that he's in.
