Lalibela, named after its 13th-century royal founder, is a small town at an altitude of 2700m, surrounded by a rocky and dry area where, only in the rainy season, farmers grow their crops.
King Lalibela, whose name means "even the bee recognizes his sovereignty" was one of the rulers of the Zagwe dynasty, whose leaders had risen up in the tenth Century and seized powers from the kings of Aksum.
So, it is said, Lalibela and his workmen, aided by angels, carved out the eleven churches of living rock that stands on the site of Rowa, the capital of the Zagwe dynasty wich ruled over Ethiopia from the 10th century to the mid 13th century.
