In spite of many changes, the station has remained the hub of Melbourne's suburban railway network.
It may not be physically in the centre of Melbourne, but Flinders Street Station is still undoubtedly the 'heart' of the city.
Eleven through platforms were provided at the station on its completion in 1910 and were vastly different from the original platforms which sported semi-circular verandahs terminated by timber valances and at the west end 'train sheds', embracing both platforms and tracks.

 History
Corpses from Melbourne and intermediate stations were carried free of charge on the assumption that mourners journeying by rail to the Cemetery would bring revenue to the Railway Department.
Like the Melbourne General Cemetery, strong population growth due to the gold rush era increased the number of residents and there were general concerns about a cemetery located in the middle of a highly populated area.
From 1 January 1980, the Government directed The Trustees of The Necropolis Springvale, to administer the Melbourne General Cemetery and The Trust now ensures the cemetery is maintained for future generations in a neat and tidy condition.

This private line was bought up by the government in 1858 (it was the first government-owned railway line) and extended across the river to Melbourne.
A power station was built, amidst controversy over its environmental impact, near the western end of the bridge in the late 1970s.

 Melbourne Buildings
Today, Melbourne is home to 5 out of the 10 tallest buildings in Australia, and Australia's tallest since 1980 in the Rialto (as well as the title of tallest in the southern hemisphere).
A recently failed proposal for the Grollo tower, shows that Melbourne is a city that well and truly aspires to great heights, and a current building boom has seen a seemingly endless supply of giant buildings being constructed.
Melbourne's skyscraper record is impressive, by any standards.

Historic Flinders Street station, with its large copper dome and row of clocks above the front entrance stairs, has been the hub of Melbourne's metropolitan train services since last century: the first trains chugged out of here in 1854.
Flinders Street station underwent a substantial renovation in the late '90s, and the resulting open-plan design, albeit a tad clinical, is conducive to moving masses of people efficiently from A to B. A gigantic open area on ground level is rimmed by coffee, snack-food and newspaper outlets and clean public toilets.
Buy your ticket at the windows just inside the "clocks" entrance, validate it before entering the station complex via the automated turnstiles, then check the overhead computerised readouts to find the appropriate platform and time of departure.

It is Station Pier, site of Melbourne's first railway line, and the seed from which the city grew.
Just as it was for Melbourne's migrants in the '50s and '60s, Station Pier's welcome remains anti-climactic.
It weathered the rattlings of a railway service from what was then called Sandridge to what is now called Flinders Street.

On the south of Thomastown there are numerous factories and an electricity terminal station, near which there is an east-west ring road reservation.
