Lamanite Conversion Prototype -- A Mighty Change
No other event in Lamanite history prior to the Savior's visit was more pronounced, and no other event so completely fits the description of their being baptized as an assembly with fire and with the Holy Ghost.
The trembling Lamanites were instructed to cry unto the voice of him who had shaken the earth, until they had faith in Christ.
5:50.) Many of these Lamanites came among the Nephites to declare "the manner of their conversion," preaching "with exceedingly great power and authority, unto the bringing down many of them into the depths of humility, to be the humble followers of God and the Lamb." (Hel.

Traveling in the wilderness toward Lamanite lands, the missionaries prepared themselves by much fasting and prayer, beseeching the Lord to enable them to bring the Lamanites "to the knowledge of the truth, to the knowledge of the baseness of the traditions of their fathers, which were not correct" (Alma 17:9).
Lamanites were converted to Christ, they gave up the tradition of their fathers, the spirit softened their hearts, and they "opened a correspondence with [their] brethren, the Nephites" (Alma 24:8).
Lamanite history would be a bitter story, of a people obsessed with a perpetual sense of deprivation, wronged at the beginning, so they thought, and wronged ever after, living for vengeance, with blood on their swords.

The Lamanites, together with the Nephites, are described as descending from the family of Lehi, a wealthy Jewish merchant, who traveled from the Middle East in 600 BC to the Americas by boat.
At one point in the book the Lamanites and Nephites coexist for two centuries in peace (from about 30 AD to 230 AD) Shortly after this period of peace and cooperation between the two begins to decline along with a reestablishment of economic class distinction in both groups.
For this and other reasons, a few Mormon scholars view Lamanites as (1) one small tribe among many in the ancient Americas, the remainder of whom were not discussed in The Book of Mormon, (2) a tribe that intermarried with indigenous Native American cultures, or (3) fictional characters.

Two verses later he states, "Behold, the Lamanites your brethren, whom ye hate because of their filthiness and the cursing which hath come upon their skins, are more righteous than you; for they have not forgotten the commandment of the Lord, which was given unto our father" (Jacob 3:5).
The curse of the Lamanites in the Book of Mormon has to do with the oft-repeated phrase "the traditions of the fathers." When the Lamanites were able to overcome the power of these traditions and were converted to the gospel they became much stronger in the faith than the Nephites.
The second approach is to educate both Lamanites and gentiles as to the historical and current meanings of the term Lamanite, and that the term should no longer be seen as a pejorative but that it is to be associated with promised blessings from the Lord.

Thus, Lamanite attackers fighting within the confined passageway were completely exposed on three different fronts to the Nephite defenders stationed on the walls and blocking access within the corridor.

The social and historical variability of the meanings of the term Lamanite requires careful attention to differences between biology and culture—the type of care that Sorenson and Hamblin have advocated and that is evident in studies of the Lemba, the African tribe with established linkages to ancient Hebrews.
Quests for Lamanite DNA must overcome the same problems but are hampered by the blanket absence of any ancient historical sources that would substantiate or clarify the cultural classifications made in the BoMor.
While researchers at FARMS are careful to note the importance of cultural influences on the construction of categories like Lamanite, they do express confidence in an Israelite genetic presence in Central America and perhaps as far away as Arizona and Colombia.

Their conclusions are based on a number of major problems that arise when one attempts to apply Book of Mormon descriptions of travel times and population growth to the vast territories of North and South America.
For instance, while the Book of Mormon makes it clear that the rival Nephite and Lamanite civilizations were centered near the "narrow neck" of land (understood to be somewhere in Central America), it says that they agreed to meet for their epic final battle at the "hill Cumorah" (Mormon 6:1-6).
