Lamar Trotti - Films as writer:, Films as writer and producer:, Film as producer:
The typical Trotti screenplay is imbued with an earnest feeling for the American past and is characterized by an easy pace, nearly plotless structure, and a concentration on human values as opposed to spectacle or melodrama.
Trotti was born in Georgia at the turn of the century; both the land and the era of his origins were to influence his work enormously.
Trotti's insistent return to the theme of the American Civil War and to more general "Southern" stories is no coincidence; it speaks of a deliberation and interest that transcends the simple typecasting which was (and is) so rampant in Hollywood.

According to what was known as the rule of "compensating moral values," censors generally advocated the final punishment and suffering of "bad" characters or their regeneration.
Lamar Trotti....found the first draft, written by Sternberg, "utterly impossible," but did not comment on this draft because the producer was already planning to ask for drastic revisions.
Trotti found the second draft (the studio's) to be better then the first, but he was still concerned about how to represent the adulterous love affair (which is present in all three versions of the script) and the studio's version of the ending.
