LambdaMOO - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
LambdaMOO was founded in 1990 by Pavel Curtis.
Hosted in the state of Washington, it is operated and administered entirely on a volunteer basis.
While the population of LambdaMOO once numbered close to 10,000 with over 300 actively connected at any time, these days it is rare to see more than a few dozen non-idle connected players at one time.

A Rape in Cyberspace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bungle made use of the "voodoo doll" subprogram on LambdaMOO, which allowed him to attribute actions to other characters that their users did not write, and sexually violated a number of the other LambdaMOO characters.
His actions incited outrage among the LambdaMOO community and brought up questions among users about the boundaries between real-life and virtual reality, which can be related to the movie eXistenZ, and how LambdaMOO should be (or should not be) governed.
The users of LambdaMOO set up a meeting time on the third day after the event, which Dibbell attended under his character name, the pseudonym Dr. Bombay, to discuss what should be done about Mr.

Bungle, and of the ghostly sexual violence he committed in the halls of LambdaMOO, and most importantly of the ways his violence and his victims challenged the 1000 and more residents of that surreal, magic-infested mansion to become, finally, the community so many of them already believed they were.
It was all very fine, you see, for the LambdaMOO rabble to get it in their heads to liquidate one of their peers, but when the time came to actually do the deed it would require the services of a nobler class of character.
But the wizards of LambdaMOO, after years of adjudicating all manner of interplayer disputes with little to show for it but their own weariness and the smoldering resentment of the general populace, had decided they'd had enough of the social sphere.

LambdaMOO is a MOO: a MUD that uses an object-oriented programming language to manipulate objects in the virtual world.
LambdaMOO appears as a series of interconnected rooms (modeled as a mansion), populated by users and objects who may move from room to room.
LambdaMOO is thus a long-standing, ongoing experiment in collective programming and creation, with often stunning results that can only be fully appreciated firsthand.

For example, LambdaMOO is rife with bulletin board-type forums that are accessible (as are their archives) by all community members, as well as guests to the site.
LambdaMOO's anonymity, combined with what many LambdaMOO participants called the "typist problem," has always offered participants such plausible deniability with which to protect their real life identities.
Since participants often keep their LambdaMOO participation secret from others in their physical space, the cyberspace activities they participate in attain the status of protected secrets, and secrets evoke a sense of participating in a liminoid situation.

The server is a program, written in a standard programming language, that manages the network connections, maintains queues of commands and other tasks to be executed, controls all access to the database, and executes other programs written in the MOO programming language.
