In 967 Otto II united the duchy with that of Capua and Benevento, which was then ruled by Pandolfo Testa di Ferro; but after the death of the latter he detached Spoleto, which was in 989 granted to Hugo, Duke of Tuscany.
In 883 Guido II united under his sway the entire dukedom, which from this time was called the Duchy of Spoleto and Camerino.
Lambert distinguished himself in the wars against the Saracens, but disgraced himself by massacres at Rome in 867; he was afterwards deposed (871), then restored (876), but was a second time excommunicated by Pope John VIII.

Duke Lambert of Spoleto pillaged Rome and the brother of anti-bishop of Rome Anastasius raped the bishop of Rome Hadrian's II daughter and then brutally murdered her and the bishop of Rome's wife.
Guido III duke of Spoleto (d-894) seized the throne of Italy and in 891 the bishop of Rome crowned him the Holy Roman Emperor.
The anti-bishop of Rome is fired as librarian and excommunicated but again restore to office.

His representative, Duke Lambert of Spoleto, under the pretence of superintending the election of the pope, invaded Rome in 867, and treated it as conquered territory.
Stephen's successor, Pope Formosus, had been compelled to give the crown also to Guido's son, Lambert as the associate of his father in the empire (892); he thus incurred the fierce hatred of Lambert, when he afterwards summoned Arnulf to Rome and crowned him emperor.

Among the more outstanding of the Frankish dukes, Guido I divided the duchy between his two sons Lambert and Guido II, who received as his share the lordship of Camerino, which was made a duchy.
Alberico I, Duke of Camerino (897), and afterwards of Spoleto, married the notorious Roman noblewoman Marozia, mistress of Pope Sergius III (904–11), and was killed by the Romans in 924.
In 883 Guido II reunited the dukedom, henceforth as the Duchy of Spoleto and Camerino.

Pope Formosus was initially forced to crown Lambert, one of the sons of the Duke of Spoleto, as co-ruler of the Holy Roman Empire.
Pope Sergius III, another Spoletan partisan who reigned from 904 to 911, overturned the rulings of Theodore II and John IX, reaffirming Formosus's conviction, and had a laudatory epitaph inscribed on the tomb of Stephen VII.
