On the Relationship between Radiance and Irradiance: Determining the illumination from images of a convex Lambertian ...
A practical realization of the radiance-from-irradiance problem is the estimation of the lighting from images of a homogeneous convex curved Lambertian surface of known geometry under distant illumination, since a Lambertian object reflects light equally in all directions proportional to the irradiance.
Finally, we present empirical and theoretical evidence showing that in practice, the irradiance depends only on the first 2 orders of spherical harmonic modes of the illumination, and can be represented as a quadratic polynomial of the cartesian components of the surface normal.
In fact, 99% of the energy of the Lambertian BRDF filter is contained by orders 0,1, and 2.

Lambertian Reflectance and Linear Subspaces - Basri, Jacobs (ResearchIndex)
Abstract: We prove that the set of all reflectance functions (the mapping from surface normals to intensities) produced by Lambertian objects under distant, isotropic lighting lies close to a 9D linear subspace.
This implies that, in general, the set of images of a convex Lambertian object obtained under a wide variety of lighting conditions can be approximated accurately by a low-dimensional linear subspace, explaining prior empirical results.

First, we represent lighting using spherical harmonics, and describe the effects of Lambertian materials as the analog of a convolution; this is similar to working in the frequency domain in signal processing.
We are then able to show that almost all the appearance of Lambertian objects is determined by the first nine components of the lighting when represented as spherical harmonics.
We can therefore prove that all reflectance functions (the mapping from surface normal to intensity) produced by Lambertian objects lie close to a 9D linear subspace, explaining prior empirical results.

In the real world, this process is actually a two step process, light hits a surface, the surface absorbs certain wavelengths of light based on its material, and other wavelengths are reflected back to the viewers eyes, producing the color we see.
And certain assumptions were made about the surfaces, for example, a Lambertian surface is completely smooth when in fact there are very few surfaces anywhere that are completely smooth (in 3dstudio, a Blinn Shader is actually a Blinn specular shader added to a Lambertian diffuse shader).
The way light reacts to a surface is known as the BRDF of the surface (Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function).

BMVC 2001: Separating Lambertian and Specular Reflectance Components using Iterated Conditional Modes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
In this paper we address the problem of separating Lambertian and specular reflection components in order to improve the quality of surface normal information recoverable using shape-from-shading.
Firstly, there are separate conditional measurement densities which describe the distributions of surface normal directions for the Lambertian and specular reflectance components.
This reveals not only that the method accurately estimates the proportion of specular reflection, but that it also results in good surface normal reconstruction in the proximity of specular highlights.

Abstract: In this paper we address the problem of separating Lambertian and specular reflection components in order to improve the quality of surface normal information recoverable using shape-from-shading.
The framework for our study is provided by the iterated conditional modes algorithm.
We develop a maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) estimation method for estimating the mixing proportions for Lambertian and specular reflectance, and also, for recovering local surface normals.

A method is presented for determining the shape of surfaces whose reflectance properties can vary from Lambertian to specular, without prior knowledge of the relative strengths of the Lambertian and specular components of reflection.
Experiments conducted on Lambertian surfaces, specular surfaces, and hybrid surfaces show high accuracy in measured orientations and estimated reflectance parameters.

Inverse rendering problem for Lambertian surfaces
For a given surface in three-dimensional Euclidean space, a reflectivity function on the surface, and a distribution of light sources, Lambertian rendering generates an image: a function on a square.
We prove that by using partial motion derivatives of images of the surface, it is possible to make the inverse Lambertian rendering problem well-posed, provided the illumination distribution or the surface reflectivity are known.
Although the inverse rendering equations are non-local and nonlinear, we show that under certain conditions they can be solved explicitly in a closed form.
