The London borough was formed in 1965 from the Metropolitan Borough of Lambeth and the part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth containing Streatham and Clapham.
To the north are the Central London districts of the South Bank and Lambeth which have a developing tourist economy while at the very south of the borough are the leafy suburbs of Gipsy Hill, Tulse Hill, West Dulwich and West Norwood.
Nearby and still in the north of the borough is St Thomas' Hospital, Lambeth Palace and the Florence Nightingale Museum.

Lambeth is a place in the London Borough of Lambeth, although the area is now more commonly known as Waterloo, after the railway station whose viaduct separates the former centre of the village from the River Thames.
Lambeth is the site of St Thomas' Hospital, the London Eye, the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Festival Hall, County Hall as well as Waterloo station.
The ancient settlement of Lambeth Marsh was immediately opposite the Palace of Westminster.

It was "unacceptable for this information to be displayed" the spokeswoman said, adding that the council had been reassured by Capita that adjustments had been made to the software so that the situation "could not happen again".
In May 2001, Lambeth Council cut short a £48m contract to outsource its benefits system to Capita claiming that the system of paying benefits had deteriorated over the previous four years.
