Lambton Castle, located near Chester-le-Street in the north east of England, is the ancestral home of the Lambton family, Earls of Durham.
Largely constructed in its present form by John George Lambton, first Earl of Durham and one-time Governor General of Canada, in the early 1800s, it was designed by architects Joseph Bonomi the Elder and his son Ignatius and built in the style of a Norman castle.
The park surrounding the castle is surrounded by a high wall and is still used for an annual pheasant shoot.

Lambton Castle, when seen from the valley, is a handsome sight indeed; perched high on its hill every bit like a typically large County Durham Castle.
At the heart of the Castle is Harraton Hall, a property the Lambton's had owned since 1688.
The Castle is in private grounds and completely invisible from any public land - but permission can sometimes be had for a visit if applied for beforehand.

Harraton Hall, found on the North Bank of the Wear some distance from Chester-le-Street, was the ancestral home of a family called D`arcys and latterly during the 17th Century, it belonged to the Hedworth family who were a prominent coal mining family.
It was demolished in 1797, having been bought some decades earlier by Ralph Lambton, so incorporating the Harraton Estates into the lands owned by the Lambtons.
This level was unmatched by any other house in the Chester-le-Street area with the exception of Lambton Castle.

 Ignatius Bonomi : Information and resources about Ignatius Bonomi : School Work Guru
His work included one of the first railway bridges in the UK (over the River Skerne, near Darlington), for the Stockton and Darlington Railway, in 1824 (hence he is sometimes referred to as 'the first railway architect').
He was also responsible for a number of church buildings (including commissions at Durham Cathedral) and historic buildings in Gothic and neo-classical styles, including Durham Castle, Lambton Castle and Burn Hall in County Durham.
