Laminariales | English | Dictionary & Translation by Babylon
Kelp are large seaweeds (algae), belonging to the brown algae and classified in the order Laminariales.
Despite their appearance they are not grouped with the normal aquatic or land plants (kingdom Plantae), but instead are included in either kingdom Protista or Chromista.

'KelpWatch' - Kelp Facts - What Are Kelps?
The Order Laminariales is characterised by individuals with a hetermorphic alternation of generations, comprising 2 free-living life phases (a macroscopic sporophyte generation and a microscopic gametophyte generations.
Members of the Laminariales are typically cold-water species, richly developed in the cold temperate and Arctic waters of the northern hemisphere, less so in the southern hemisphere and absent from the Antarctic.
Four families are recognised worldwide (Alariaceae, Chordaceae, Laminariaceae and Lessoniaceae), two of which occur on southern Australian coasts (Lessoniaceae and Alariaceae), where they are often conspicuous elements of the mid to upper sublittoral zones.

We have examined chloroplast and ribosomal DNA diversity among kelp species, genera and families, and between the kelp order Laminariales, other orders of brown algae, and other divisions of plants.
We were able to demonstrate a surprisingly close evolutionary relationship of kelp and the freshwater fungus Achlya.
On the basis of ribosomal and chloroplast DNA data we have proposed that the taxonomy of the Laminariales is greatly inflated and suggested a reduction of advanced families of kelp from three to one, a reduction of kelp genera from 25 to five, and a reduction of kelp species from well over 100 to 25.

This is the second record of Undaria being inadvertently introduced to shores beyond Asia, and it is the first record of its occur- rence in the Southern Hemisphere.

Sexual reproduction in the large brown seaweeds of the Laminariales, commonly called kelp, involves signaling chemicals, or "pheromones," that induce sperm release from antheridia and subsequent chemotactic orientation of sperm towards the luring eggs.
Lamoxirene (cis-2-cyclohepta-2',5'-dienyl-3-vinyloxirane) has been identified as the sperm-releasing pheromone in the largest and most advanced group of the Laminariales, comprising the Laminariaceae, Alariaceae, and Lessoniaceae.
