Lamma is, in contrast to Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, peaceful and tranquil, with relatively natural scenery.
Lamma was named after the shape of the island which looks like the limb of a tree, or the letter Y (corresponding to the Chinese character of "a"), and Namm (n is allophone of l) means "south".

From the Chinese pavilion the trail continues south and crosses Lamma's rugged spine at a point where the island stretches barely a third of a mile wide (0.5 kilometer).
Of course, the trail also passes the expensive new villas of former city dwellers who moved to the island to escape those same bright city lights, which, ironically, are powered by the massive generating station on the other side of Lamma.

Lamma Island: Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan
This image is perhaps outdated, but Lamma does offer a great contrast to the city, and its six thousand or so residents include a fair proportion who have come in search of an alternative lifestyle: maybe focusing on arts and crafts, or wanting to live somewhere rural whllst commuting to a city office.
Though the south of the island offers Lamma's best hiking, there is a pleasant, easy walk from Yung Shue Wan in the northwest, south to the village of Sok Kwu Wan on the central east coast.

We set off for the boat landing at 6:30, walking a few blocks to the shore, next to an ornate sculptured garden that was to be a private park used by Cyberport’s most exclusive business residents.
After a 20-minute ride we arrived at a harbor that was dotted with a series of open-air seafood restaurants, most of which were packed with diners.
Further down the path we reached a spot with a marvelous view of Hong Kong’s city lights, but we couldn’t linger for long since we had to make the last boat or we could be stranded at Lamma for the night.

We took an early afternoon ferry to Lamma Island, then wandered around Yung Shue Wan, the village at one side of the island.
Then we essentially followed the Family Walk across the middle of the island, which takes you through or near most of the scenery, including some small beaches, a couple lookout points, and several small villages.
The 3-mile trail is not quite flat but it's pretty gentle and we took it slow to enjoy the views.

Due to a recent fire, presumably caused by a cigarette being discarded at or since Lamma Fun Day, there were about 10 there today.
At various times throughout the year, they congregate around and settle on a particular type of bush, presumably to mate and lay their eggs.........
A large number of passage migrants are in Hong Kong, and every now and then some of them grace Lamma with their presence.........

Off at the pier at Yung Shue Wan, the main town, we find that the rumors of Lamma being a peaceful, idyllic island are greatly exaggerated.
Tony wants to climb the highest peak on the island, Shan Tei Tong 353m (Mt. Stenhouse 1165ft), but we don’t have a detailed trail map so we attempt to follow what look like trails from the LP guide.
The ride back to the harbor is fun, everyone on board has had a great day on Lamma and excellent food at the Rainbow Seafood Restaurant, and a free ride back to boot.
