Enter Lan Yu (striking Liu Ye), a fresh-faced and innocent architecture student from the country with little or no romantic or sexual experience, and the two mismatched men embark on a love affair that is, by turns, sexual, emotionally detached, loving and tragic.
Lan Yu, though a minor film, is an important film in its own way, a small but finely observed tale of a closed-off man who, for a brief time, abandons his rigid and morally questionable ethics in favor of experiencing true love.
Lan Yu is a compelling film that begins on a note of cheap sex, and by the end has come full circle with its questions of fate, inevitability and responsibility that is hard-won through real feelings and loyalty.

Since LAN YU is based on BEIJING STORY, a 3-part, 10-chapter novel published on the Internet by the anonymous "Beijing Comrade," its twists and turns may stem from the novelist's need to preserve suspense over several installments.

INTERVIEW: Love in the Time of Tiananmen; Stanley Kwan's "Lan Yu"
As a love story, "Lan Yu" brings to bear a thematic universality that renders the characters' gayness incidental, or casually irrelevant.
Still, to say that "Lan Yu" is a love story like any other love story would be to neglect a certain reality, one that denies the film a number of privileges usually enjoyed by the genre.
I felt that that type of storytelling wouldn't work with "Lan Yu." The line between melodrama and soap opera is very fine and I didn't want "Lan Yu" to become a soap opera.

 Lan Yu (2001)
Apparently based on a novel called "Beijing Story" anonymously posted internet, Lan Yu had to be filmed in secrecy in China because of its controversial subject: a homosexual relationship between a college student and an older man. This is indeed an intriguing set up for what turns out to be an unfortunately dull film.
Spanning a (vaguely alluded to) decade, Lan Yu follows the relationship of a successful businessman sugar-daddy and the virginal college student that he picks up for a one-night trick.
Ultimately, Lan Yu is basically a love story between a cute piece of ass and a bulging wallet.

Set in the 80s in the beautiful Beijing, Lan soon fell in love with Han, and was very secure in his love for the man. Han, on the other hand, wanted to keep the relationship strictly a casual one, warning Lan that they would eventually break up if the relationship became too intimate.
Though he tried to deny his feelings for Lan by keeping the relationship on a monetary basis and showering Lan with expensive gifts, he could not stop the strong desire he had for Lan, and the wish to be with him as often as he could.
Lan Yu is a fine example of such a film, as well as a victim of it.

If Stanley Kwan's Lan Yu is to be believed, there's a life to be lived in modern China that's not measurably different from the life of ambitious businessmen anywhere else in the world, a life of cell phones and German cars and business class travel and suburban monster homes.
Handong (Hu Jan) is a successful businessman whose introduction to Lan Yu (Liu Ye) is simple enough - a starving student who'll do anything for money, and in Beijing a bit of amateur prostitution isn't apparently considered out of the ordinary.

Lan Yu is the first dramatic feature made in China to reference, however briefly, the Tiananmen Square massacre, but on that score it's an unremarkable, if brave, movie.
The affair endures many twists and separations, yet each estrangement only brings the two closer, and the director, Stanley Kwan, swathes them in layers of shadow that make us seek out the light of connection in their faces.
''Lan Yu'' is at times too restrained, yet there are moments it captures the erotics of intimacy in a way that makes most American love stories look downright unfree.
