Lanark is one of the oldest Royal Burghs in Scotland, its Charter being granted by King David I (1124-1153).
The Lanimer Queen is still elected annually by her peers, in rotation from six schools, Lanark Grammar School, Robert Owen Memorial Primary School, Lanark Primary School, St Mary's Primary School, New Lanark Primary School and Kirkfieldbank Primary School.
Lanimer Day is, for many, the highlight of the week and the culmination of up to a years inspiration, application and perspiration.

Certainly, Lanark boasts a rich historical pedigree, since a parliament was held here in 978, plus legend has it that William Wallace lived in Castlegate (in the town centre) and was even married in Lanark's Church of St. Kentigern.
During the 1640s Lanark became a centre for the Covenanters, with the famous Declaration of Lanark (1682) confirming the Declaration of Sanquhar (1680).
New Lanark's population in 1851 was 1,642, and the village comprised 337 houses.

One of the conditions attached to the granting of a Royal Burgh Charter by King David I (1124-1153) was that the Burgesses of the town were required to examine their March or boundary stones every year and report back that all was well or ill according to what they had found.
Lanark is probably unique among the Royal Burghs in that it has carried out this duty every year since it was first imposed.
