In March 1964 Lancashire Constabulary was involved in an experiment which combined the motorway patrols of Lancashire, Cumbria and Staffordshire into one group to police the M6 motorway.
Police Sergeant J. Smith was the observer from Lancashire during the experiment and went on patrol with a cine camera and traffic cones.
The police constables are the regular observers in the aircraft, but all members of the staff are fully trained and can step into the role of observer when required.

A Christian couple from Lancashire have been awarded £10,000 in an out-of-court settlement after they were questioned by police about their moral beliefs.
Mr and Mrs Roberts had sued the police and council, claiming the incident last December had breached their rights to freedom of expression and freedom of religion.
But in a joint statement, the police and council said they had come to an agreement regarding the claim and said they had apologised to the couple for "the way the incident was handled".

A hi-tech crime-fighting tool which catches criminals on the move has helped Lancashire police arrest 276 people and recover £108,560 of stolen goods in five months.
Lancashire’s officers made the arrests between June and October for offences ranging from robbery, theft, drugs, outstanding warrants and driving offences.
Police numbers reached a record high of 136,386 as of the end of August, an increase of 4,118 since December 2002.

Lancashire Police has introduced seven diesel-engined Volvo S60s to its fleet of Motorway cars.
All the commissioning and equipment installation was carried out by Lancashire Police’s Vehicle Maintenance Unit at Hutton on the outskirts of Preston.

The network replaced existing fixed line connections with high bandwidth wireless links that support voice, data and video.
