 Lancaster County Virginia Records
Named for its counterpart county in England, Lancaster County was formed in 1651 from Northumberland County and York County and comprised the land on both sides of the Rappahannock River to the ridges.
In 1656 the upper portion of Lancaster was cut off to form "Old" Rappahannock County, and in 1669 the territory west of the river was taken to become Middlesex County.
Lancaster has had no losses from fire or war, and except for a few gaps, the county record is complete.

Middlesex County was established from part of Lancaster County about 1669, and the remaining Lancaster County Territory south of the Rappahannock became Essex County in 1692.
The Lancaster County Court divided the county into 2 parishes in 1654, the Upper Parish and the Lower Parish.
The portion of the Lower Parish north of the Rappahannock became Lancaster Parish in 1657, but was reunited with the parish on the south side of the Rappahannock as Christ Church Parish in 1666.
