Lance spent about 1.5 million 1960 US Dollars to build two F1 cars, several desmodromic valve engines that never performed to specifications, and a rear-engined F1 that never was raced.
Lance ran in 6th place until it started to rain whereupon he dropped back through the field before stopping in the pits to recruit Augie Pabst, who was quite fast in between stops to dry out wet electrics.

By anyone's standards, Lance Reventlow was a wealthy young man. He was the Woolworth heir, who on his 21st birthday inherited the equivalent in today's money of $60-70 million, but even before then had enjoyed a large allowance.
Reventlow was later to claim that his car was two years late and had he tackled F1 in 1958 the Scarab would have been competitive, but when one looks at Monaco qualifying times in previous years one discovers that he and Daigh would have only just been on the grid in 1954.
As the son of Betty Hutton, the heiress to the Woolworth fortune, Lance Reventlow was able to indulge his passions, the foremost of which was racing cars.

Count Lance von Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow was the only child of Danish nobleman Count Curt von Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow and American socialite Barbara Hutton who almost died giving birth to him.

Lance Reventlow had been through the wars and after being commissioned by Briggs Cunningham to do a Buick engine conversion on a Cooper-Monaco, the last Scarab was born.
Reventlow's shop didn't ordinarily do such conversions as the Cooper-Buick but, had other things in mind when doing so and the crew took careful notes.
The car was raced by Reventlow and did reasonably well but, after IRS troubles and a "high maintenance" wife, a broke Lance Reventlow sold everything and quit racing for good.

Lance set out to be World Champion with an all American car and it would have been quite a triumph!
