Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Created by Stan Burns and Michael Marmer, Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp was an American television show on ABC from Sept. 12, 1970 to Sept. 2, 1972 that featured a cast of chimpanzees who were given apparent speaking roles by overdubbing them with human voices.
The plot was focused around Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp, and his female colleague Mata Hairi, in secret agent and spy scenarios.
Link worked for APE (Agency to Prevent Evil), who were engaged in a long conflict with evil organization CHUMP (Criminal Headquarters for Underworld Master Plan).

Even if I can still say "Oh, Lancelot!" and "Hi, Mata" in the voices of the characters, this show is a strong contender for the worst piece o' s*** ever to "jump the chimp".....
It took years for me to develop a genuine aversion to chimps, and this show was a great contributor to that hatred.
As for Lance Link, I loved it when I was a very young lad and they showed it on the old WLVI 56 (all of you other Bostonians should remember) usually in the afternoon before or after Mighty Mouse and other such cartoons.

Voiceovers were ad-libbed on the set, giving birth to beautifully absurd moments of the chimps breaking into songs at the end of sentences or spontaneously reciting Mother Goose rhymes just so it would look right.
The songs were performed by Lancelot Link and the Evolution Revolution, a psychedelic pop band that could be an homage to or spoof of the Monkees.

The joys of watching Lancelot Link is that you get reunited with the supporting characters that made the show so memorable.
But the surprising thing that I didn't know about Lancelot Link was that there were some recognizable names that did the primate voices for the show.
First, some of the chimps are all in cringe-worthy racial stereotype outfits, and there are some equally cringing voiceovers to accompany them (one almost feels like counting how many times the Dragon Woman says "Ah So").

A little background: the series was originally titled "The Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp Hour," and was an hour long (in its first season, I believe).
Apart from the bizarre concept of chimps acting out a spy thriller (with a dash of "film noir"), notice how the dialogue seems like it may have been ad-libbed specifically to match the lip movements of the chimps.
I also remember "The Comedy Channel" (which later merged with "HA!" to created Comedy Central) airing some of the Lancelot Link segments as part of some show hosted by a character who was a parody of a 1940s movie detective.
