  Lancelot
Sir Lancelot (Lancelot du Lac, or Lancelot of the Lake) was one of the Knights of the Round Table in the legends of King Arthur.
Lancelot, however, is not an original member of the cycle, and the development of his story is still a source of considerable disagreement between scholars.
The Lancelot story, in its rise and development, belongs exclusively to the later stage of Arthurian romance; it was a story for the court, not for the folk, and it lacks alike the dramatic force and human appeal of the genuine “popular” tale.

 Lancelot Biography
In Arthurian legend, Sir Lancelot (Lancelot du Lac, or Lancelot of the Lake) is one of the Knights of the Round Table.
Chretien de Troyes' treatment of Lancelot is contradictory; in the Erec, his earliest extant poem, Lancelot's name appears as third on the list of the knights of Arthur's court.
The prose Lancelot was frequently printed; J. Brunet chronicles editions of 1488, 1494, 1513, 1520 and 1533 — of this last date there are two, one published by Jehan Petit, the other by Philippe Lenoire, this last by far the better, being printed from a much fuller manuscript.

 Sir Lancelot (Launcelot)
Lancelot was forced to defend her honour a second time, when Méléagant later accused her of an affair with Kay, and once again Bagdemagus successfully pleaded for his son.
Lancelot finally slew Méléagant in combat at King Arthur's court, and his literary reputation as chivalric hero and arch-exemplar of 'saver-of-damsels-from-distress' was sealed.
Lancelot, in particular, appears to symbolise on the one hand - in his innocence - the achievement of a certain kind of order, and on the other - in his ultimate sufferings - the tragic real-world truth that all good things come to an end.

 Sir Lancelot
In Lancelot du Lac, Lancelot is actually knighted by Guinevere; the lovers are brought together by the knight Galehot, and on the night they first sleep together, the pieces of a split shield given Lancelot by the Lady of the Lake miraculously unite.
Lancelot often travels in disguise and in several versions of the story spends his early years ignorant of his rightful name (in Lancelot du Lac, he is called "King's Son"), until he learns it through various adventures.
According to Malory, after Lancelot dies, his corpse is kept aloft for two weeks (or possibly a month) but maintains its sweet smell, exuding the odor of sanctity more often associated with saints.

So he sent his son Lancelot to live with the "Lady of the Lake" and to one day be knighted at the court of King Arthur.

The complete ruin of Camelot is played out through the tragic figure of Lancelot and his broken heart, as he's viewed as a sincere warrior whose greatest fault is that he's only human and can't be a God.

Lancelot of the Lake (Lancelot du Lac)
Lancelot Of The Lake is a relentless, implacable demythologization of the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
At one point, Arthur leads Lancelot and Gawain into the fort’s central chamber and gestures around the table, ticking off all the seats that are empty, naming all the knights who have died in service of a goal Bresson quite clearly sees as foolish and futile.
It is not enough that Lancelot’s fellow knights have died for nothing; to Bresson, even his protagonist’s love must be devalued, neutered, debunked.

Brewer, E. Cobham. Dictionary of Phrase & Fable. Lan’celot du Lac.
Sir Lancelot was the son of King Ban of Benwicke, but was stolen in infancy by Vivienne, called “La Dame du Lac,” who dwelt “en la marche de la petite Bretaigne;” she plunged with the babe into the lake, and when her protégé was grown into man’s estate, presented him to King Arthur.
Hence the cognomen of du Lac given to the knight.
Sir Lancelot is meant for a model of fidelity, bravery, frailty in love, and repentance; Sir Galahad of chastity; Sir Gawain of courtesy; Sir Kay of a rude, boastful knight; and Sir Modred of treachery.

Legend tells us that as a child, Lancelot was left by the shore of the lake, where he was found by Vivien, the Lady of the Lake.
There may be some truth to this since Lancelot was a favorite of the Queen's, and he rescued her from the stake on two different occasions.
Comments: Lancelot was apparently only added to the Arthurian legends by Mallory, who wished to have a French hero in the saga, and he was not present in the earliest renditions of the tales.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Lancelot du Lac
ancelot du Lac is one of Robert Bresson's late films—his 11th feature and his third in color (after Une Femme douce and the rarely-seen Four Nights of a Dreamer).
Compared to John Boorman's Excalibur, Lancelot du Lac is a relatively uneventful interpretation of Arthurian myth, told over the course of a short period of time during Lancelot and Guinevere's love affair.
One could say that Lancelot du Lac is about nothing more than the clanging of armor or the movements of legs, but the fact that he cares about the way situations look and feel, its textures and emotional tones (even as filtered through the singular Bressonian personality) is exceedingly important—and exceedingly cool.

The Resolute Æsthetic: Bresson's Lancelot du Lac
At the very heart of Lancelot du Lac (1974), Robert Bresson places a single, resonant shot: Lancelot (Luc Simon) comes through a door and approaches a crucifix in the foreground of the shot, slightly out of focus.
Lancelot's true focus is not on the cross, but on himself.
Of all Lancelot du Lac's transmutations, perhaps Bresson finds this most resonant: man's strange compulsion to subjugate his most ingrained of natures, his instinct for survival, to quench an unearthy thirst for destruction.
